How big will my Saint Bernard get?

The American Kennel Club gives the following size guidelines for Saint Bernards:

  • Females are 26-28 inches tall and weigh 120-140 pounds
  • Males are 28-30 inches tall and weigh 140-180 pounds

How big your own Saint Bernard puppy will get depends on several factors.

Genetics

The main factor in your Saint Bernard’s final size is genetics. Size is inherited in irregular patterns though: Not always does a puppy of large parents become a particularly large dog himself.

If you want to know what adult size to expect, look at as many relatives of your pup as possible: that means not only the parents, but also aunts and uncles (the littermates of the parents), the grandparents as well as any half-siblings or full-siblings.

Size can be inherited in odd ways in dogs – one especially tall grandparent’s genes might skip a generation and result in tall grandchildren.

Spay/Neuter

There is some evidence that pediatric spay/neuter surgeries influence future adult size in dogs.

Dogs that are neutered or spayed taller in life tend to grow taller because they are lacking hormones that would usually cause growth plates to close.

Of course, whether and when you spay or neuter your dog will always depend on a variety of factors. You should not make this decision solely based on its impact on growth. If you think there is any way in which your Saint Bernard could mate with another intact dog, you should strongly consider having your pup altered.

Health

Some owners are surprised by the high price of feeding a growing Saint Bernard. Be prepared to feed your dog a healthy, high-quality diet that might be expensive, especially in the first year.

If your pup suffers from intestinal worms or malnutrition (and worms can cause malnutrition as well!), his growth might be stunted. You absolutely need to consult with a vet as soon as possible if you suspect your dog has one of these conditions.

The good news is that as soon as a worm infestation is cleared up with medications, your pup will continue growing and reach his normal adult height.
