So I’d like to be very upfront here:
Shine was an AMAZING learner in front of my students.
In fact, I have videos of him picking up on moves pretty quickly.
Students would often tell me, “Your dog learns everything instantly.”
So I should say he’s a clever dog, and I’m grateful we didn’t face a lot of puppy issues at the start.
But when I put Shine and my other dogs together, I noticed there was still a slight difference between them.
Which makes me wonder…
Why didn't Shine have the foundation like all my other dogs?
Well, all my other dogs have been through games and trick training their entire lives.

So I was still curious about Shine’s situation.
Initially, my son was responsible for raising Shine…

I naturally started to train more tricks with him, just like I did with my other dogs.

Some days I would train with Shine for 10 minutes, other days 5, and sometimes even as little as 2-3 minutes.
It would consist of ANY type of training (like what I covered in my other courses, e.g. obedience, focus, etc.).
Over time, I realized that our training sessions would always include the following elements:
- Engaging games
- Fun tricks
- The “secret” element that I will cover down below!
These kept Shine engaged with me throughout our training, making him more likely to stay focused during future sessions.

What’s the first thing I should start with when training my dog?
Simple – games, trick training…
AND daily food enrichment.
Here’s why.
Because of the simple repetition of games and tricks, you show your dog how to learn and build a stronger behavioral history. Then, your dog is able to pick up new skills faster.
This is the biggest factor that affects how quickly a dog learns a new behavior.
Your dog will have a solid reinforcement history, and they’ll know:
- What is being rewarded (that should be repeated)
- … and what is not (that should be ignored)
On top of that:
With daily food enrichment, you provide your dog with fulfillment, help them overcome some of their struggles (boredom, too much energy, being destructive, or lack of focus), and make all kinds of training 10X easier.
So, by providing your dog with food that is not immediately available…
It will teach them how to:
- Be more patient and not get distracted during training.
