Let me tell you about an unfortunate incident that happened to the dog of a former student of mine…
When a dog with no recall caused a dangerous, life-threatening collision
Bill was a dog who lived with his owner across the road from a popular campground.
And although Bill was a very friendly dog, he also didn’t have any recall skills at all. He would take ages to come in from the yard whenever his owner called him. And on walks, he’d sometimes disappear for a while before finally showing up again.
So to stop Bill from trying to chase and make friends with all the campers, he was mostly kept shut indoors all the time.
The problem was that sometimes, when he was out in the yard, Bill would manage to jump the fence and go running up to people.
His owner didn’t worry too much about this, because it didn’t happen too often…
Until one night, when Bill was let out into the yard, saw a group and – ignoring his owner’s screaming at him to come back – jumped the fence and sprinted over to meet them…
BANG!
As Bill was sprinting across the road, he was hit by a car.
The driver had no chance to avoid the dog in the darkness.
Bill was seriously injured. His owner, who had been watching from a distance, ran over with a sinking feeling in his chest. It was his worst fear come true.
Thankfully, after months of recovery and healing, Bill turned out okay in the end.
And afterward, his owner contacted me and asked me to help train him so he had a strong recall.
Was I successful?
Well, I didn’t want something awful to happen to Bill again…
And I’d like to see my student live CONFIDENTLY with his dog…
So I helped train his dog to the point where…
He would come when called, every single time, no matter what!
And I’ll tell you more about how I achieved that in a moment…
But first I want to point out something important:
Bill’s owner did not take any steps to improve his recall until after something serious happened.
This is very common.
Many of us let our dogs get into potentially dangerous situations because we assume they have a “natural sense” of how to stay safe.
But the scary truth is that dogs do NOT know how to stay safe. And…
If your dog ever ignores you when you call them, then that could be a warning sign!
A warning sign that if you don’t take action soon, then their behavior could quickly escalate…
“Level 1” of bad recall might begin with your dog taking a super long time to come in from the yard…
And if that behavior goes unchecked, then pretty soon they might hit “Level 2” and start bolting out the front door whenever you open it…
Followed by “Level 3” where they’re chasing rabbits and squirrels on walks and ignoring your calls to come back…
At “Level 4”, your dog might run away from you on a walk and get lost, forcing you to spend half an hour searching for them again….
And at “Level 5”, your dog could run up to an unfriendly animal and get attacked, run into traffic, or run away from you and get seriously lost for a long time, and so on…
I definitely do NOT want this to happen to any of my students.
That’s why a strong recall is the single most important thing you can ever teach your dog – more than sit, stay, or any other cue.
Having a strong recall lets you call your dog back when they’re unknowingly running into danger…
And it also allows you to relax…
Knowing you can let your dog off the leash outdoors…
So they can enjoy complete freedom while still staying completely safe.
But how can you teach your dog a strong recall?
Despite how important recall is, so many dog owners struggle to teach their dogs a strong, consistent recall that works in all situations.
When your dog sees something that interests them and zooms off, it can seem like there’s nothing you can do to bring them back.
No matter if you:
❌ Keep on calling or shouting their name, hoping to grab their attention…
❌ Shake your treat bag or wave their favorite treats in the air…
❌ Try to use some sort of training tool, like a clicker or dog whistle
But why do none of these work? What’s going on to make your dog completely ignore you?
Well, let me tell you about…

Take a moment now to think about what life is like from a dog’s perspective.
Your sense of smell is incredible.
And while the indoors is pretty boring, with the same smells day in and day out…
The outside world is super fun and stimulating for dogs!
There’s all sorts of weird and wonderful smells everywhere… There’s many new dogs and humans to meet… And there’s even little furry creatures to chase around.
Over time, your dog has learned that running around after these smells and animals is much more fun than listening to your recall cue and coming back to your side.
In fact, listening to you means the end of their fun.
Or put simply:
Your dog learns that if they ignore you, they get to have more fun!
This causes a “vicious cycle” where the more you try to train them to recall, and the more they fail to listen, then the more ingrained their unwanted behavior becomes. And so it becomes even more impossible to train them.
After all, how are you supposed to reward your dog for coming back, when you almost never have the chance to do so?
And as I said before, the problem is that your dog’s love of fun can get them into trouble – like with Bill, who loved to run up to campers until he was eventually injured.
I’ve lost count of the number of stories I’ve heard of dogs running into traffic…
Or running up to an unfriendly animal and being seriously hurt.
Which is why many dog owners feel they have to choose between keeping their dog on a leash every walk, where they’re bored, can’t explore, and can’t enjoy life fully…
Or risking it and letting their dog off their leash, hoping that something bad doesn’t happen to their beloved pet.

So, we already established that dogs often won’t recall outside because there are so many other more fun things for them to do. And they’ve learned that listening to your recall cue is the end of that fun.

So the very first thing we need to do is to teach your dog that when you call them over, listening to you does not mean the end of the fun…
But it’s more fun than anything else in the world!

Does Recall Expert need a LOT of hard training to see these results?
No, absolutely not.
While training recall is a gradual process, that doesn’t mean it has to be a slow process.
If you follow my system without skipping any lessons, and if you train consistently every day, then you will start seeing results faster than you would have ever believed possible.
Especially since recall is probably one of the easiest things to train your dog to do, once you know how.
It’s a cakewalk compared to reactivity training, where you have to be on the constant lookout for triggers or certain body language… Or leash walking, where you have to be quite precise with when you reward your dog…
With recall training, all you have to do is call your dog over (in the way I’ll show you in the course) and then give them a reward when they do it. Nothing could be easier.
Plus, your dog’s daily recall training sessions do not have to take very long either.
3 minutes a day is all you need.
In fact, I’ve found that short training sessions actually get better results than longer sessions.
Because when your training sessions are too long, your dog will get bored and lose focus.
And since recall training (the way I show you) is so simple and fast…
3 minutes is plenty of time to get in a ton of repetitions, or “reps”.
You can easily squeeze in 30-50 reps in those few minutes… Which means your dog will be practicing their recall HUNDREDS of times per week, and they will quickly learn what to do.
Compare that number of reps to what most dog owners do – occasionally calling their dog once or twice on a daily walk – and you can see why my recall students are so successful!

When you’re doing so many reps per week, it doesn’t really matter if your dog fails once or twice…
But when you’re only doing a few reps a day, then one or two failures can completely ruin their training.

The videos will show you exactly how to plan and carry out your recall training sessions, including what rewards to use, where to train, how long to train, and how to advance!
With an average duration of 2-4 minutes, videos are concise and ideal for busy schedules.
Most students opt to watch one or two videos daily and put them into practice immediately.
Yes! Positive, science-based training works for dogs of almost any breed or age.
We showcase a wide variety of dogs in the videos of this course: 12 dogs total from 10 different breeds, ranging in age from four months to 10.5 years!
All the equipment you need is what you likely already have at home!
We recommend using flat collars or harnesses for your dog. If you are in an unfenced area, you should also have a leash or long line for safety.
Additionally, we will need food and/or toy rewards to reinforce our dog’s recalls.
If you practice according to our recommendations (three to five minutes per session, about five times a week), completing the class will take 1-2 months.
You receive lifetime access to the online class material. All videos are pre-recorded and view-on-demand. This way, you can study whenever it is convenient for you.
In this class, we build the recall from the ground up. That is perfect for dogs who have struggled with recall training, as we start with foundations and gradually advance as the dog is successful.
We recommend starting at the beginning and picking a novel recall cue for dogs who have been ignoring their recalls for a long time. This way, we get a fresh start and can develop a solid recall behavior without prior poor associations.
We discuss all training issues surrounding recall training, such as lack of food motivation, motivating unenthusiastic dogs, working with disengaged dogs, involving multiple family members in the recall practice, etc.
Our actual training sessions are concise. Your sessions can be as short as three minutes each. We recommend training at least five times a week for optimal results. So if you have 15 minutes a week – that’s enough!
We also show you complete training sessions with our own dogs in the class. They are all very brief.
Our pro trainers are available Monday – Friday to answer any questions you submit. We also give feedback on videos that you send in.
Additionally, we offer live weekly Q&A sessions. There you can chat with our trainers and fellow recall classmates about any questions that come up – and, of course, share your successes, too!
