I just purchased a Kong, could you please send me the measurements for the pumpkin and chicken for a 9 week old puppy also how much yogurt would you try for first time? Thank you

    1. Steffi Trott

For the first time, you could do 45% chicken, 45% pumpkin and just a little bit of yoghurt (easiest to just take 1 can of pumpkin, 1 can of chicken and maybe a tablespoon or two of yoghurt).
If it agrees with your puppy’s tummy, you can add more yoghurt over time. A 9 week old puppy will not be able to finish the amount of stuffed Kongs you would get out of a can of pumpkin and a can of shredded chicken in a day – so filling several Kongs and freezing them for the next couple days is the best idea. I always prepare a whole lot at once and then use them whenever the puppy needs some relaxation or chew time.

        Thank you so very much!

Great suggestions here. Thanks! Our 12 week old labradoodle loves bully sticks and could eat one a day if I let him. I plan to try filling the chew toy and freezing next. Question: Do we need to consider the calorie intake of these treats and subtract that from their daily food?

    1. Steffi Trott

Yes, absolutely! This is not all in addition to “usual meals”. By the time you give plenty of frozen toys and feed treats and food through training, your puppy will have eaten a considerable amount of chis daily calorie needs already 🙂

Hi, I just got a 10-week old standard poodle puppy. My only other dog was a mini poodle which I got as a puppy 17 years ago (he passed away in March). She is very active, which is no surprise! I am on vacation this week but next week I go back to work from home. Unlike my previous dogs, she doesn’t seem interested in Kongs! I tried filling them with various things, and freezing them, but she seems to have little interest once she sniffs them. Surprisingly even peanut butter doesn’t seem to attract her. I did get some Himilayan cheese chews which she likes for a little while. Do you have other suggestions for stuffing the kong…I last tried a mixture of banana, peanut butter, and her kibble, and she didn’t like that either. I thought of trying the stuff you squirt in the kong but that really looks like junk food for dogs. Still, it might keep her busy when I need to make phone calls! What do you think?

Sorry, should gave watched the video first! I will try the yogurt and pumpkin/chicken flavors. With the spray cheese, do you mean something like Cheese Whiz that is for humans or the Kong variety? With the cheese whiz, I’m assuming you would still freeze it?

    1. Steffi Trott

      No worries!
I have another article with a lot of recipes here:
      https://spiritdogtraining.com/training/basic/kong-stuffing-recipes/
I use the human variety for the spray cheese. And I freeze it yes, but if your puppy is really picky you can also first let it be room temperature, then freeze it for 30min, then an hour etc. … so that it gradually gets harder and harder instead of all at once.

How do you “cap -off” the small opening on the Kong to stop the ingredients from coming out? Do you smear a small bit of peanut butter on the small opening?

    1. Steffi Trott

If the consistence of the filling is right, you don’t actually need to cap it off at all.
I show the filling process here:
      https://vimeo.com/461971805/2cd78cffe3
If yours is more runny, you can put a small piece of cheese, hotdog, kibble etc. on the small end.

I used a frozen rag for my pup’s chewing. It really helped keep him busy!

    1. Steffi Trott

Nice, and the coolness helps with teething discomfort as well 🙂 Just make sure he doesn’t ingest any pieces!

Did you once post a website that offered bulk fillable rubber “Kong’s”? Or ones at a discounted price?

    1. Steffi Trott

Yes, unfortunately they have actually raised their prices since I started to tell everyone about their deal though! I like this bundle:
