How big will my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel grow?
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are small lap dogs. The American Kennel Club gives the following sizes for grown dogs:
- 12-13 inches tall
- 13-18 pounds in weight
Depending on how old and how athletic your dog is, he might be on the lower end of the weight spectrum or the higher.
Most Cavalier King Charles Spaniel become quite calm and sedentary dogs once they reach 2-3 years of age. It can be tricky to motivate them to exercise a lot, and their weight usually increases.
What sizes do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels come in?
Based on the AKC definition, there is only one size of the Cavalier – the standard size that is 12-13 inches tall.
Unfortunately, in recent years it has become popular to breed “Miniature Cavaliers”. These are especially small specimens of the breed and often are sold at very high prices.
Because these irresponsible breeders only select for small size (and usually not for good temperament, soundness, genetic health etc.), the offspring are often prone to developing health and behavior issues.
If you see ads for “Mini Cavaliers” – do not believe them, and do not give those people your money. You should always strive to select a responsible, AKC-registered breeder who will breed dogs within the breed standard.
At what age is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel fully grown?
As a small dog, you can expect your Cavalier to stop growing by the time he is 9-10 months of age.
The larger a dog is, the longer it takes for him to reach his final height – and the smaller the dog is, the faster he reaches his adult size. While your Cavalier will still continue to gain weight and fill out after 10 months, do not expect him to grow any taller.
How much should a 4 month old Cavalier puppy weigh?
At 4 months, expect your puppy to weigh in at around 9-10 pounds. Note that at this age, most puppies are very lean and active. It is completely normal for your puppy to not be very heavy or to have a layer of fat over his ribs. In fact, if you do notice that your puppy feels “chunky”, it is probably time to feed him less!
How much does a 6 month old pup weigh?
At 6 months, you Cavalier will already weigh 11-13 pounds. He is close to his final adult weight already at this age! Your puppy will still continue growing his hair much longer, but his body is nearly done growing. As your Cavalier approaches his first birthday, he will become more muscular, and his chest will get deeper and broader.
Is my Cavalier overweight?
While most puppies stay pretty lean as they run and play all day long, as soon as a Cavalier reaches adulthood his weight can become problematic. Nearly all grown-up Cavalier King Charles Spaniels want to eat much more than is good for them. The best way to determine if your Cavalier is overweight is to run his fingers across his sides.
- If you can easily feel the ribs because they are sticking out, and you can also see vertebrae and hip bones sticking out, your dog is underweight.
- If you can feel the ribs but they are not sticking out, your dog is perfect!
- If you have to push in to feel the ribs or you cannot feel the ribs at all, your dog needs to slim down.
Many owners of toy breeds struggle with keeping their dogs at a healthy weight – it is definitely not an issue that only occurs in Cavaliers. If you cannot keep your dog’s weight down by cutting back on his treats and taking him for walks, consult with your veterinarian. A special food formulated to promote weight loss can help your pup get back in shape.
